Volvo XC40, EX40, and EC40 refreshed: Gemini-powered screen and range up to 584 km

Volvo Cars has announced a comprehensive update for its compact SUV family, including the XC40, the fully electric EX40, and the coupé-SUV styled EC40. The new series has been refreshed with updates to exterior design, in-cabin digital experience, driver assistance systems, and electric range figures.

As part of the 2028 model year refresh, the front section of the vehicles features a redesigned grille, reshaped hood, and updated fenders. While Volvo's characteristic "Thor's Hammer" headlight signature is retained with matrix LED technology, the rear taillights and bumper design have also been updated on the XC40 and EX40.

The EC40 maintains its coupé-SUV character known for its sloping roofline, while new 18, 19, and 20-inch diamond-cut wheel options are offered for the mild-hybrid XC40. The "Black Edition" package, featuring a black logo and darkened wheel details, is also included in the updated product range.

The most notable change in the cabin is the new 11.2-inch touchscreen placed on the center console. The system, which carries Volvo's current user interface, aims to provide faster access to core menus. The infotainment system also includes integration with Google's AI assistant, Gemini.

With Gemini support, drivers can plan routes using natural conversational language, manage messages, and control certain vehicle functions via voice commands. The interior also offers new upholstery options, wood trim details, and updated cabin lighting.

Volvo has also expanded its sensor and software infrastructure for safety. The vehicles are equipped with front and rear radar units, a new front camera, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These components strengthen environmental perception and support features important for urban driving, such as door opening warnings.

The advanced Pilot Assist system has been updated with lane-change support, while automatic emergency braking and collision-avoidance steering intervention are also part of the safety package.

The fully electric EX40 offers a range of up to 575 kilometers on a single charge according to WLTP measurements. In the EC40, which stands out with its more aerodynamic roof structure, this figure increases to 584 kilometers. The software in the series can be updated via over-the-air updates.

While orders for the refreshed 40 series have opened in certain markets, mass production is planned to begin in the autumn months. No official schedule has been announced yet regarding when the models will arrive in the Turkish market.
