Speaking to a group of journalists on the plane returning from his visit to Germany, AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed the election law he himself introduced.

Addressing the 50+1 percent requirement necessary to win the presidential election, Erdoğan said that the condition, which caused the elections to go to a second round for the first time in May, could be removed.

"IT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE TO CHANGE THE 50+1 REQUIREMENT"

Erdoğan stated, "I agree that the 50+1 requirement should be changed; it would be appropriate. If we switch to a system where the candidate who receives the majority is elected, the presidential election would be quick, would not be troublesome, and would not lead to wrong paths. The current 50+1 obligation leads parties down the wrong paths. It is unclear whose hand is in whose pocket. There is the six-party table, the sixteen-party table. But if it is said that 'the candidate who receives the most votes is elected' in terms of vote count, the election would be completed quickly," he said.

While Erdoğan reiterated his call for a new constitution through these words, the political agenda changed instantly.

TWO OPTIONS ON THE TABLE

According to the report in Hürriyet; it was stated that this rule change could be included in the new constitution work and that there are two options on the table.

It is reported that the options of "40+1" or "the candidate with the most votes should be elected" are being considered in the constitutional amendment package instead of 50+1.

It was learned that the package, in which it was noted that there would be no changes regarding the two-term rule for presidential candidacy, would also include regulations on family and headscarves.

It was stated that the AKP would visit parties on this issue and would specifically seek a consensus with the İYİ Party.
