Turkey will head to the polls for local elections on March 31, 2024. Istanbul and Ankara are among the cities where the local elections are most highly anticipated.
The AKP aims to win back the metropolitan municipalities it lost in 2019, particularly Istanbul and Ankara.
In this context, while the AKP's alliance negotiations with the New Welfare Party continue, Kısa Dalga columnist Sedat Bozkurt shared his impressions from political circles.
In his article titled 'New Welfare Announces Its Candidates', Bozkurt wrote that AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could not persuade the YRP and detailed the YRP's potential candidates.

"Erdoğan could not persuade the New Welfare Party (YRP). He was also quite angry that they voted against his budget. Because they are critically important for the elections, he cannot express this anger. But he has noted it down. The YRP is also not overly focused on the People's Alliance issue. They have prepared their roadmap. They will announce their Ankara and Istanbul candidates between January 5 and January 10. Mehmet Altınöz is being considered for their Istanbul candidate, and former minister and Deputy Chairman Suat Kılıç is being considered for Ankara. The Milli Görüş potential in Istanbul, and the abundance of nationalist candidates in Ankara coupled with the lack of a conservative candidate, are the YRP's most important advantages."
