Association for Supporting Contemporary Living: 'It is not the earthquake, but the lack of precautions that kills'

The Association for Supporting Contemporary Living (ÇYDD) held a memorial ceremony to commemorate our citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş, to call on authorities to take the necessary measures to prevent such pain from being experienced again, and to raise awareness about earthquake preparedness.

The ceremony held at the ÇYDD Headquarters was attended by ÇYDD President Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksel, members of the ÇYDD Board of Directors, volunteers, and headquarters staff.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence for the citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake.

Following this, the names of the ÇYDD scholarship students and ÇYDD members who lost their lives under the rubble were read out.

'LACK OF PRECAUTIONS KILLS'

In a statement made via ÇYDD social media accounts, it was stated: "On the anniversary of the earthquake disaster that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, and affected 11 provinces, causing the loss of more than 50 thousand lives, we held a memorial ceremony at our Headquarters with the participation of our President Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksel, our Board members, and our staff. On this painful day, we would like to emphasize once again that it is not the earthquake, but negligence and lack of precautions that kill.

These and similar painful events we have experienced remind us that we must constantly take measures for a safer and more prepared future. We commemorate those who lost their lives with respect and mercy, and we call on everyone to be more conscious and prepared so that similar disasters do not occur in the future."

'THEY HAD NOT GONE TO SLEEP TO DIE'

Speaking after the ceremony, ÇYDD President Ayşe Yüksel stated that they were in great sorrow, saying: "Today is February 6. Last year, on February 6, we all woke up to great pain. A major earthquake occurred, centered in Kahramanmaraş and affecting 11 provinces. There was a great loss of life. The lives of 11 of our young students, who were supported by the Association for Supporting Contemporary Living and had gone to the region for the semester break, ended under the rubble. Also, two of our valuable members remained under the rubble. Thousands of people said goodbye to life along with them. None of them had gone to sleep to die. Our pain is immense," she said.
