Canada to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest: First new country since 2015

Canada has earned the right to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. With the finalization of the country's public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada's full membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Canada will take the stage in the semi-finals of the contest to be held in Bulgaria next year.

With this decision, Canada will be the first new country to join Eurovision since Australia was included in the competition in 2015. CBC/Radio-Canada will announce details regarding how the artist and song representing Canada will be determined in the coming months.

CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard stated that the participation would make Canadian talent visible on "one of the world's most established music stages."

Bouchard emphasized that audiences in Canada have been following Eurovision for years and that their own country will now be represented on the stage.

EBU Eurovision Song Contest Director Martin Green also welcomed Canada's participation in the contest.

Recalling Canadian artist Céline Dion, who competed for Switzerland and won Eurovision in 1988, Green said they look forward to Canada bringing "its own voice, creativity, and energy" to the Eurovision stage in 2027.

CONTEST TO BE HELD IN BULGARIA

The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Bulgaria following Dara's victory in the 2026 final with the song "Bangaranga," which earned the country its first-ever win.

Canada's interest in the contest has also been notable in recent years; during the 70th Eurovision in May, Canada ranked among the top three countries in the "Rest of the World" vote.

The contest's schedule for next year coincides with a period of ongoing backlash regarding Israel's participation. Following the EBU's decision to allow Israel to take part in the contest, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain had withdrawn. It is not yet clear whether these countries will return in 2027.
