CHP reacts to theater ticket price hikes

Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chair Gülşah Deniz Atalar issued a written statement regarding the increase in State Theaters ticket prices, drawing attention to the economic and social impacts of this situation. Stating that "access to theater is not a privilege, but a fundamental right," Atalar expressed that young people, students, and retirees, in particular, are being deprived of theater due to these hikes.

Emphasizing that empty theater halls are unacceptable, Atalar said, "Artists are taking the stage, but the halls are empty. This picture is unacceptable." Noting that price policies create a class-based divide, Atalar stated that this situation is not only economic but also a form of cultural exclusion.

PARTICIPATION IN CULTURAL LIFE IS NOT A LUXURY

Atalar stated that the government's economic policies are also being felt in theater halls, saying, "Participation in cultural life is not a luxury. However, going to the theater has become inaccessible for many people today." She expressed that the number of spectators has dropped, particularly because seats in the front rows are sold at high prices, and that economic barriers are being erected between the stage and the public.

Atalar noted that if it is assumed that the State Theaters' budget is insufficient, other questions must also be asked. She asked, "From which budget are the costs of plays canceled days before the premiere covered, or the expenses of names hired from outside at high fees when directors could be found within the institution? If there are no resources, why is this waste being tolerated?"

Referring to Atatürk's words on the importance of culture and art, Atalar said, "Mustafa Kemal Atatürk emphasized at every opportunity the importance of culture and art in the progress of a nation. The State Theaters rely on Atatürk's words: 'A nation that remains without art has one of its life veins severed.'" She stated that today, the primary purpose of this institution—its duty to contribute to the cultural development of the public—is being overshadowed by the government's policies that are disconnected from the people.

Stating that as the CHP, they advocate for a public-oriented cultural policy, Atalar underscored the responsibility of the state and local governments in the field of culture and arts. "We are fighting for a system where theater, concerts, and exhibitions can reach not just certain segments, but every part of society. Cultural and artistic activities must be supported by the state and reach everyone," she said.
