From the archive of Ara Güler: 'Kumkapı Fishermen' meets art lovers
Centering on the series of articles titled "Together with the Kumkapı Armenian Fishermen," published in the Jamanak newspaper between May 21-27, 1952, the "Kumkapı Fishermen" exhibition will meet art lovers at the Ara Güler Museum on May 8.

The series of articles that inspired the exhibition and the accompanying photographs shed light on the now-nonexistent Küçük Deniz Street and the fishing shelter, the people who worked there, and a way of life.
Ara Güler, with the series "Together with the Kumkapı Armenian Fishermen" published when he was just 24 years old, established a place for himself in the field of photojournalism at an early age. This photo-reportage, which went down in history as one of the important works that brought him fame in his profession, was also a harbinger of his successful international career in the near future.
Following 1952, Ara Güler visited the Kumkapı neighborhood many times over the years, documenting a region he knew would disappear, along with the people living there. He immortalized the fishing captains, crew members, and net menders by photographing them within their daily lives.
Previously unexhibited photographs of Kumkapı from the Ara Güler archive, ephemera, and examples of contact prints showing Ara Güler's editorial and creative process and his choices are meeting the audience for the first time.
