İstanbul Sanat opens its doors at the Haliç Shipyard
The city's new culture, arts, and life center, İstanbul Sanat, has opened its doors at the Haliç Shipyard, a legacy of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, a maritime heritage of the Ottoman Empire, and one of the oldest shipyards in the world still in operation.

At İstanbul Sanat, in addition to the İstanbul Art Museum, which is the city's first public contemporary art museum, there is a festival area, a performing arts center, a children's art workshop, a restaurant, and a museum shop.
RESTORATION COMPLETED
The Haliç Shipyard, one of the oldest shipyards in the world still actively functioning and continuing to serve under the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) City Lines (Şehir Hatları A.Ş.), is now hosting İstanbul Sanat, the city's new culture, arts, and life center.
The historic shipyard, where the İBB Department of Science Affairs completed comprehensive restoration work and İBB Heritage (İBB Miras) undertook the repurposing process, has achieved an exemplary transformation. In addition to the İstanbul Art Museum, the city's first public contemporary art museum, the site has gained social spaces such as a festival area, a performing arts center, a children's art workshop, a restaurant, and a museum shop.
The İstanbul Art Museum, located within İstanbul Sanat, opened its doors with the 'Ah Güzel İstanbul' (Oh Beautiful İstanbul) exhibition, which brings together different collections and institutions.
OVER 300 WORKS ON DISPLAY
The 'Ah Güzel İstanbul' exhibition, which traces the artistic heritage of İstanbul by navigating through different periods, layers, and forms of expression, presents over 300 works by esteemed artists of Turkish painting, including Süleyman Seyyid, Hoca Ali Rıza, Şehzade Abdülmecid Efendi, Halil Paşa, Avni Lifij, Feyhaman Duran, İbrahim Çallı, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, Komet, Avni Arbaş, Eren Eyüboğlu, Fikret Mualla, Hikmet Onat, Fahrelnissa Zeid, Şevket Dağ, Zeki Kocamemi, Burhan Doğançay, Cihat Burak, Hamit Görele, Naile Akıncı, Mehmet Güleryüz, Ferruh Başağa, Neşe Erdok, Tevfik Fikret, Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem, Mıgırdiç Civanyan, Mihri Hanım, Sabri Berkel, Hale Asaf, Fikret Otyam, and Selma Gürbüz.
As part of the exhibition at the İstanbul Art Museum, the rich collection of the İBB, which essentially belongs to the people of İstanbul, is also being presented to art lovers.
One of the most special encounters in the exhibition is the return of a unique piece from the İBB collection: the portrait of the Conqueror of İstanbul, Fatih, being made visible again in his own city, at the shipyard that is his legacy, and reuniting with the people of İstanbul... The importance and distinctiveness of the portrait of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, painted in the workshop of Gentile Bellini, lies in the fact that it is one of only three oil paintings dating back to the 15th century.
The “Ah Güzel İstanbul” exhibition, which also offers visitors the chance to see the portrait of Suleiman the Magnificent by Italian painter Cristofano Dell’Altissimo and the medallion of Fatih Sultan Mehmet by Costanzo da Ferrara, can be visited at the İstanbul Art Museum between March 3 and September 3, 2024.
