Since being added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 17, 1994, Safranbolu has become one of Turkey's most important tourism centers over the past 29 years, becoming a 'global brand' by hosting visitors from 108 countries.
Known by titles such as the "fingerprint of the Ottoman Empire," "open-air museum," "capital of preservation," and one of the "20 best-preserved cities," Safranbolu is distinguished by its traditional mansions from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, which are typically three stories high, feature 6-8 rooms, and are designed to meet practical needs with an aesthetic flair, alongside historical structures like inns, baths, mosques, and bridges dating back to the Ottoman era.
Home to 1,467 examples of civil architecture, 48 mosques, 31 bridges, 131 fountains, 213 other historical structures, 5 urban protected areas, and archaeological sites, Safranbolu welcomes more than 1 million domestic and foreign tourists annually.
'WE HAVE 1,942 REGISTERED CULTURAL ASSETS'
Emphasizing that Safranbolu is a city included on the World Heritage List with an area of 1,013 square kilometers, and that the 'Historical Bazaar' section covers a 70-hectare area where 4,000 people live, Safranbolu District Governor Şaban Arda Yazıcı stated, "There is a feature that distinguishes our Safranbolu from other cities on the World Heritage List. Our country is 783,562 square kilometers, while our Safranbolu is 1,013 square kilometers.
Across our entire country, there are 122,144 registered historical immovable cultural assets. Among these, we have 1,942 registered cultural assets in just 1,013 square kilometers. In this respect, Safranbolu is a unique and unparalleled city where you can breathe in history at every square meter, enjoy the delicious local gastronomy, stay in traditional mansions, and explore its 131 fountains, 31 bridges, 48 mosques, and 1,466 examples of civil architecture," he said.
It is known that the unique, mathematically aesthetic 2-3 story, 6-8 room houses of Safranbolu, dating back to the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries during the Ottoman Empire, made a significant contribution to its inclusion on the World Heritage List.
