Shorts worn by Muhammad Ali in historic match go up for auction

The shorts worn by boxer Muhammad Ali, who dedicated his life to the fight against racism, in a 1975 match are being put up for auction by the famous Sotheby's auction house in New York.

The shorts, which the boxer wore during his match against Joe Frazier, are expected to find a buyer for 6 million dollars.

The match, known as the 'Thrilla in Manila', is recognized as one of the most unforgettable and brutal bouts in boxing history.

The match, which took place in the Philippines in 1975, lasted 14 rounds and ended after a stoppage call came from Frazier's corner.

HAS NUMEROUS AWARDS

Widely considered by many authorities to be the greatest heavyweight boxing champion of all time, Muhammad Ali made his major breakthrough by winning the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Angered after being refused entry to a restaurant following his victory due to his skin color, Ali threw the gold medal he had won into the Ohio River.

Years after his retirement, the American boxer was reunited with the medal he had lost when he received an award at the 1996 Atlanta Games, where he also carried the Olympic torch.

Muhammad Ali, who became the youngest World Heavyweight Boxing Champion at just 22 years old after defeating Sonny Liston in 1964, converted to Islam following his victory.

PASSED AWAY IN 2016

Muhammad Ali, who battled Parkinson's disease for a long time, passed away on June 3, 2016, at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was being treated for a respiratory illness.
