The protest by the Saturday Mothers, who have been asking about the fate of their relatives who were forcibly disappeared in custody every Saturday since May 27, 1995, at Galatasaray Square in Istanbul, is entering its 1000th week.
"I STAND WITH MY CONSCIENCE, NOT WITH POLITICAL PARTIES"
Artist Teoman has re-recorded the song "My Mother is Saturday," which the band Bandista wrote for the Saturday Mothers.
Speaking to İlke TV, Teoman said, "I performed the song 'My Mother is Saturday' for the 1000th week of the Saturday Mothers. You know, I am someone distant from politics; it is a field I do not like. I define myself as being above politics; I stand with conscience, not with political parties. The suggestion to perform this song came to me from the Saturday Mothers. I sensed the negative reactions that might come, but I didn't think for a moment about rejecting this offer. I didn't think about it because I know myself. If I had rejected it, I would have had to live with a guilty conscience that would have lasted my entire life."
Teoman added, "Ever since I can remember, I have been aware of the suffering endured by every segment of society in Turkey. I have tried to understand every segment throughout my life. I have not seen anyone as an enemy, and I will not. In a Turkey where, in my opinion, people are very young, I am now 'Big Brother Teoman' due to my age. And I am fulfilling the requirements of being a big brother, trying to show all of Turkey that social peace and conscience are the path that must be taken, through my words and my actions."
