The number of libraries operating in Turkey was recorded as 48,733 last year. The number of e-books in university libraries also increased by 23.4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 118 million 373 thousand 442.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced the "library statistics" for the year 2023.
Accordingly, as of the end of last year, there were 48,733 libraries operating across the country, including 1 Presidential National Library, 1 National Library, 1,295 public libraries, 627 university libraries, and 46,809 libraries in formal and non-formal education institutions.
The number of books increased by 32.6 percent last year compared to the previous year. The number of books in the Presidential National Library reached 2 million 532 thousand 299.
Compared to 2022, the number of books increased by 3.5 percent in the National Library to 1 million 689 thousand 166, by 2.7 percent in university libraries to 21 million 666 thousand 947, by 4.8 percent in public libraries to 24 million 204 thousand 501, and by 56.9 percent in formal and non-formal education institution libraries to 68 million 970 thousand 463.
The number of people using public libraries increased by 25.3 percent last year compared to the previous year, rising to 33 million 561 thousand 919. The number of registered members in public libraries was recorded as 6 million 193 thousand 356, an increase of 11.2 percent in the same period.
The number of university libraries in Turkey was calculated as 627, with 477 being state universities and 150 being foundation universities.
NUMBER OF E-BOOKS INCREASED BY 23.4 PERCENT
The number of e-books in university libraries increased by 23.4 percent last year compared to the previous year, reaching 118 million 373 thousand 442.
The number of registered members in university libraries increased by 5.3 percent to 4 million 199 thousand 285, and the number of non-book materials increased by 8.8 percent to 1 million 662 thousand 552.
A total of 71 thousand 200 books were published in the country last year. The number of published materials increased by 18.4 percent last year compared to 2022, reaching 99 thousand 25.
When publications were examined by subject, it was observed that 29.9 percent of the materials published last year were academic, 19.9 percent were educational, and 17.6 percent were adult fiction literature.
