WHAT IS THE PLOT OF THE PLAY OTHELLO?
As a tragedy, Othello focuses on a wide variety of themes. Some of these themes include racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, and morality. There are many characters in the work, and each has been assigned very characteristic traits. The play is built around 5 main protagonists.
The main character, Othello, is a Black commander who is very good at his job. Iago is the villain of the work, and almost all events revolve around Iago. He is a ruthless, hypocritical man whose heart is full of malice and hatred. Iago is also Othello's ensign, but he harbors hostility toward Othello because he appointed Cassio as his lieutenant instead of him.
This is actually the root cause of all the events that unfold in the work. Desdemona is the woman Othello loves dearly. The work begins by focusing on the love between Othello and Desdemona. However, Desdemona's father, Brabantio, is a very racist man and does not want his daughter to marry a Black man.
Even though his daughter has repeatedly expressed that she loves Othello, Brabantio refuses to let his daughter marry, and because of this, Desdemona runs away with the man she loves, and they get married. On the night the girl runs away, a few people who witness the event immediately reveal the situation to Brabantio, and as soon as Brabantio finds his daughter, he tells her that he disowns her for marrying a Black man.
