The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's (IMM) one-time, 1 TL subscription support for students for the new academic term has been approved with the consent of all political parties in the IMM Assembly.
Within the scope of the transportation support offered by the IMM for the new academic term, the proposal, which allows students who load a subscription between September 21 and October 17 to benefit from a one-month subscription for a one-time fee of 1 TL, was brought to the agenda of the IMM Assembly. The proposal was accepted with the support of all political parties in the Assembly.
Discussions on the proposal turned into a political debate over the point student transportation fees have reached since 2019. Speaking at the IMM Assembly, AK Party Legal Commission member Muhammet Kaynar stated that the single-ride student fare, which was 1.25 TL in May 2019, has risen to 22.55 TL in 2026, and the monthly student subscription has increased from 40 TL to 653 TL, noting that the 1 TL application is only for one month.
CHP Council Member Melendiz Dalyan İzgi, on the other hand, said that the monthly student subscription was 85 TL in 2018 during the AKP era and was reduced to 40 TL in 2019. Arguing that the increase in transportation costs should be evaluated together with general economic conditions, İzgi stated that diesel was around 6-7 TL in 2019, while it has reached approximately 95 TL today.
