12punto obtains details of dialysis scandal that left three dead: Solution used for circulation was administered to patients

Burdur State Hospital saw three patients lose their lives and 13 others intubated following a dialysis scandal on May 25. 12punto has obtained the details of the incident, which affected 33 patients undergoing dialysis. 

'SOLUTION USED FOR CIRCULATION WAS ADMINISTERED TO PATIENTS'

Following the incident in Burdur, the Ministry of Health launched an administrative investigation, while the Burdur Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated a judicial investigation, and dialysis patients in the city were transferred to neighboring provinces. 

Following the dialysis scandal in Burdur, the CHP formed a delegation and sent it to the region. Led by Deputy Chair Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz, Samsun MP Murat Çan and Bursa MP Kayıhan Pala met with patients and conducted examinations. Speaking to 12punto about the background of the dialysis scandal, Samsun MP Murat Çan said:

“There is no disruption regarding the service itself. During maintenance, the ethylene glycol, or antifreeze solution, used in the circulation of the dialysis unit's cooling systems leaked into the dialysis pure water tank. 

Pure water also circulates within the patients' veins through various filtration methods. Therefore, ethylene glycol was administered to the patients. After the maintenance was performed, no analysis was conducted to check 'what we are giving to the patients.'”

'SAMPLES TAKEN DURING AUTOPSY ARE BEING COMPARED WITH THOSE TAKEN FROM THE DIALYSIS SYSTEM'

CHP Burdur MP İzzet Akbulut confirmed the incident, stating, “Samples were taken during the autopsies of the citizens who lost their lives. These are being compared with samples taken from the dialysis machine. The results are expected within about a month.”
