Another intern has fallen victim to a workplace accident at a business located on Istanbul Street in the Karaağaç neighborhood.

WORKPLACE OWNER AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY SPECIALIST ARRESTED

14-year-old Arda Tonbul got his head caught in a sheet metal bending machine while working on it at the metal, iron, and steel company where he was interning. Tonbul was rushed to the hospital but passed away despite all medical interventions. Following the incident, the workplace owner, H.Ö., and the Occupational Safety Specialist, Ö.K., were arrested by the court and sent to prison.

"IF THERE HAD BEEN AN ATTENDANT THERE, PERHAPS MY CHILD COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED AT THE FIRST IMPACT"

Father Raşit Tonbul said, "I know that it is strictly forbidden for children to use that machine. However, he would work on it with his supervisor. At that moment, his supervisor had some business and left the area. The child was curious and had a desire to learn; he put his head between the machine parts—we don't know if there was an object or a piece there, of course. At that moment, without realizing it, he touched the pedal with his foot and got his head caught. The child remained in the machine at the scene for 16 minutes. There was no one there. If there had been an attendant there, perhaps my child could have been saved at the first impact. 16 minutes is a very long time. We see that there was great negligence in the accident. We also see that this negligence is not being addressed and is being covered up," he said.
