234 aftershocks occurred in 17 hours in Simav, Kütahya

Following the 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred yesterday in the Simav district of Kütahya, more than 234 aftershocks ranging from 1.0 to 4.5 in magnitude have been recorded in the 17 hours since.

Aftershocks continue following the 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred yesterday at 12:59 PM in the Simav district of Kütahya. Just 13 minutes after the main shock, a 4.0 magnitude tremor occurred, while two more earthquakes measuring 3.6 and 3.4 were recorded shortly thereafter.

THE NUMBER OF AFTERSHOCKS HAS EXCEEDED 234

Today at 01:48 AM, a 4.5 magnitude aftershock centered in Simav occurred. Immediately following this, another earthquake measuring 3.5 was recorded at 01:49 AM. According to AFAD data, more than 234 tremors ranging between 1.0 and 4.5 in magnitude occurred in the 17 hours following the main shock, up until 05:57 AM today.

FELT IN ISTANBUL AND IZMIR AS WELL

The earthquake was felt in many cities, including Istanbul and Izmir. Kütahya Governor Musa Işın announced that 8 abandoned houses in Simav sustained damage. Additionally, cracks appeared on the roof and walls of the municipal service building in the Hisarcık district.

STATEMENT FROM MINISTER YERLIKAYA

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya stated that there were no negative reports following the earthquake and that scanning operations in the region are ongoing.

EARTHQUAKE STORM IN THE REGION

As will be recalled, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on the evening of August 10 in Sındırgı, Balıkesir, located to the west of Simav. Following this tremor, which resulted in one death and 29 injuries, an "earthquake storm" occurred in the region, and the effects of the aftershocks were still continuing. Now, a similar process is being experienced in Simav.
