3 arrested for human smuggling via live social media broadcast

Three people have been arrested in Istanbul for allegedly smuggling irregular migrants while broadcasting live on social media.

In Istanbul, 5 suspects alleged to have engaged in irregular human smuggling by broadcasting live on social media were apprehended, and 3 of the suspects were arrested.

In a statement from the Edirne Governor's Office, it was noted that the Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams are making intensive efforts to catch human smugglers who profit unfairly by putting irregular migrants in danger. Within this scope, smuggling networks are being exposed and brought to justice through operations.

In this context, teams organized an operation in Istanbul to catch human smugglers who made a post on July 21, 2024, via social media, claiming "we delivered the migrants to their address" while broadcasting live.

During the operations, 5 human smugglers were taken into custody. Following the completion of their procedures at the Edirne Provincial Gendarmerie Command, 3 of the suspects were arrested by the judgeship to which they were referred.

The 2 other suspects were released under judicial control conditions.
