3 MPs calling for a party convention to meet with Kılıçdaroğlu today: 'Critical hours in CHP'

Following the Ankara Regional Court of Justice's "absolute nullity" ruling regarding the CHP's 38th Ordinary Convention, the main opposition party is experiencing intense hours. CHP heavyweights Engin Altay, Gürsel Erol, and Ali Öztunç, who have called for an emergency convention to overcome the crisis, are meeting today with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who has returned to the seat by court order, following their meeting with Özgür Özel yesterday.

TRAFFIC BEGAN YESTERDAY: THE FIRST STOP WAS ÖZGÜR ÖZEL

Elazığ MP Gürsel Erol, Istanbul MP Engin Altay, and Kahramanmaraş MP Ali Öztunç, who argue that the only way to lead the CHP out of chaos is to put the ballot box back in front of the delegates, began their shuttle diplomacy yesterday.

The three experienced MPs first met with elected Chairman Özgür Özel and his administration on June 2 to evaluate the situation and conveyed the idea that the legitimacy crisis could only be resolved through an emergency convention.

ALL EYES ON KEMAL KILIÇDAROĞLU TODAY

Following the summit with Özgür Özel, the three names will sit down today with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who was reappointed as CHP Chairman by court order. It was learned that during the meeting, they will call on Kılıçdaroğlu to ensure the party is not further damaged in court corridors, to prevent casting a shadow over the first-place success achieved after 47 years in the March 31 local elections, and to announce an "Extraordinary Convention" calendar as soon as possible.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Özgür Özel, who was elected chairman with the overwhelming support of delegates at the 38th Ordinary CHP Convention held on November 4-5, 2023, had achieved historic success in the March 31 local elections. However, with the Ankara Regional Court of Justice ruling for "absolute nullity" (invalidity) in the convention lawsuit filed, Özel and his administration were removed from office, and the party's management was transferred back to former Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
