4 comments from Özgür Demirtaş on the CBRT crisis: 'If tabloid-style issues continue...'

Renowned economist Özgür Demirtaş outlined 4 different scenarios regarding Hafize Gaye Erkan and the potential new governor rumored to be appointed to the CBRT. While Demirtaş suggested Cevdet Akçay for the CBRT, he stated that if Erkan remains and 'tabloid-style' issues continue, the loss of seriousness and the damage could be profound.

Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş, Chair of the Finance Department at Sabancı University, addressed the allegations in the press regarding Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan.

Stating that "there are four options," Prof. Dr. Demirtaş listed them as follows:

1) If the Governor changes and Cevdet Akçay becomes governor: The markets will continue from where they left off, and even more strongly. (Because it is known that Prof. Dr. Cevdet Akçay is the name behind all the positive moves of the Central Bank that I have praised in the past).

2) If the governor changes and another name takes office: Then there will be serious turmoil in the markets.

3) If the current governor remains and all allegations are cleared: The country will continue on its path (on the condition that the Central Bank continues to make the right decisions).

4) If the current governor remains and tabloid-style issues continue: Seriousness will diminish and the damage will be profound.

The situation is that clear.”

WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE CBRT?

Central Bank employee Büşra Bozkurt had alleged in a complaint filed with CİMER that she was fired by Erol Erkan, the father of Central Bank Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan.

Bozkurt claimed that Hafize Gaye Erkan's father, Erol Erkan, had slapped an employee before firing them.

Stating that he was surprised by the events, Erol Erkan said the following:

"Is such a thing possible? I have a daughter too. She is like a daughter to me as well. I am truly surprised at how she became a tool for such a conspiracy."
