Following the earthquake that caused great fear in Istanbul, the Compulsory Earthquake Insurance has come to mind. According to data from the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (DASK), while the rate of residences with compulsory earthquake insurance across Turkey is 56 percent, it is noteworthy that even though the insurance rate in Istanbul remains above the Turkish average, 4 out of 10 homes still do not have earthquake insurance.
ALTHOUGH INTEREST HAS INCREASED AFTER THE KAHRAMANMARAŞ EARTHQUAKES, IT IS STILL INSUFFICIENT
Although interest in earthquake insurance has increased following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred two years ago, a significant number of homes still do not have Compulsory Earthquake Insurance.
According to DASK data, the compulsory earthquake insurance rate in Istanbul is 62 percent, and the number of active policies is at the level of approximately 2.6 million. While the insurance rate across Turkey is 56 percent, Istanbul ranks above the Turkish average with an insurance rate of 62 percent. Despite the fact that the insurance rate in Istanbul remains above the Turkish average, it is noteworthy that 4 out of 10 homes still do not have earthquake insurance.
MARMARA REGION IS ABOVE THE AVERAGE
When looking at the regions, the Marmara Region ranks first in insurance rate with 64 percent, while the lowest insurance rate was in the Black Sea Region with 45 percent.
According to DASK data, Yalova reached the highest insurance rate in the Marmara Region with 83 percent, followed by Sakarya with 82 percent and Tekirdağ with 79 percent. The lowest rate was recorded in Bilecik with 47 percent.
HOW CAN YOU REACH DASK?
Following the earthquake that occurred in Istanbul yesterday, citizens can call the DASK "ALO 125" Compulsory Earthquake Insurance Line for insured structures that have sustained damage, and can easily report damage via the "www.dask.gov.tr" address and the e-Government Gateway.
DASK, which the state offers as a guarantee, secures residences against earthquakes and disasters such as fire, explosion, landslide, and tsunami directly caused by earthquakes. Since September 27, 2000, when the Compulsory Earthquake Insurance practice began, both the institution and insurance companies have continued their efforts to increase insurance awareness in society.
