6.1 magnitude earthquake in Sındırgı, Balıkesir

According to the statement made by AFAD, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir at 22:48. The depth of the earthquake was announced as 5.99 km.

The earthquake in question was felt in Istanbul, Bursa, Çanakkale, and İzmir.

STATEMENT FROM THE MAYOR OF SINDIRGI

Sındırgı Mayor Sak made statements following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake. Sak stated that there was no loss of life regarding the earthquake in the region and that a few damaged buildings had collapsed.

AFTERSHOCK OCCURRED

Shortly after the earthquake, tremors with magnitudes of 4.2, 4.0, and 3.9 occurred.

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya announced that field inspections had begun following the earthquake in Sındırgı, Balıkesir.

In a post on his social media account, Minister Yerlikaya stated, "A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir. All teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions have immediately begun field inspections regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces. I offer my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters."

Minister of Interior Yerlikaya made the following statement regarding the Sındırgı earthquake:

3 buildings and one shop collapsed; these were structures that were previously identified as damaged in a prior earthquake and were not in use. According to the initial results of the inspections carried out by the Gendarmerie, we are not reporting any destruction in the villages, and according to initial assessments, there is no loss of life.

AFAD issued warnings following the earthquake, stating: "Do not enter damaged structures in the region under any circumstances, do not stay in the vicinity of risky buildings, and continue your communication via text messages or internet-based applications."

This is not an earthquake under Sındırgı, but an earthquake that occurred in the mountains to its south! A 100-kilometer surface is rupturing here. A new rupture has formed in a section extending towards the east there.

This earthquake is not on the fault plane in Simav; in Simav, there were 5.4 magnitude earthquakes in what we call the hanging wall block.

This is an earthquake that occurred not under Sındırgı, but towards the mountains going south of Sındırgı, so the people of Sındırgı should not expect a larger earthquake.
