A letter from Selahattin Demirtaş to the Saturday Mothers

Selahattin Demirtaş sent a letter to the families who have been at Galatasaray Square for 1,000 weeks, demanding to know the fate of their relatives who were disappeared in custody and calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Galatasaray Square, where they have been asking about the fate of their relatives disappeared in custody, the Saturday Mothers held their 1,000th-week protest. Closed off by police barricades in 2018, Galatasaray Square was reopened after 6 years.

Former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, on the occasion of the 1,000th week, The Saturday Mothersreceived a letter.

Selahattin Demirtaş wrote the following:

"My dearest Saturday Mothers, Saturday Families,

Whether inside or outside, as politicians, we are ashamed before you. We are ashamed because we have yet to alleviate your pain. We are ashamed because we have not been able to hold the mentality that closed that square to you, gassed you, and beat you with batons to account.

But know that with you, we are always more hopeful and more resilient. I swear that we will never stop until we gift peace and freedom to all the mothers suffering in these lands, to all our people, regardless of whether they are Kurdish or Turkish. Just like you, and to be worthy of you, we will resist.

Even if we are not physically among you at Galatasaray Square in this thousandth week, our hearts and souls are with you.

I kiss the hands of you all, and your hearts that have turned into a place of fire."
