Grandma Gülsüm, who became etched in memory for her role in the Akbelen resistance in the Milas district of Muğla, has passed away.
The Akbelen resistance activists shared the following statement on their X account:
“There were two unforgettable pioneers of the resistance; Grandma Zehra and Grandma Gülsüm, standing on the left and the right. They were the conscience of those who have fought for years to protect their forests, villages, and living spaces. Today, neither of them is with us anymore; however, the determination, anger, and stubbornness they left behind continue to live on in every tree, every structure, and every breath of Akbelen. Their bodies may have grown weary, and their canes may have been planted in the soil; but their steps never retreated even once. Now, rest in peace… We give you our word: We will continue to carry the struggle you entrusted to us on our shoulders against those who harm these lands.”
