According to Mehmet Şimşek, there was no 'VAT increase'

The VAT rate applied to restaurants and cafes was increased from 8 percent to 10 percent, and the rate applied as 18 percent was increased to 20 percent. Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek announced that the measure in question was not a VAT increase but a 'regulation'.

With the regulation introduced by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance to prevent VAT abuse in food and to resolve uncertainties on this issue, restaurants and cafes will also calculate VAT at 10 percent on the food and beverages they sell.

Making a statement on his social media account regarding the matter, Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek said, "There was no VAT increase! A regulation was made to ensure that the VAT collected by businesses from citizens is documented correctly. We thank our citizens who showed sensitivity on this issue and provided us with information."
