Acquittal in presidential insult case following Saraçhane protest

Seven people who were put on trial for "insulting the President" due to slogans chanted during a protest held in Saraçhane on July 1, 2025, to protest the potential arrest of presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and municipal bureaucrats, have been acquitted.
THE YOUNG PEOPLE HAD BEEN DETAINED AFTER THE PROTEST
Following the conclusion of the protest, some young people were detained and arrested on the grounds of the slogans they had chanted. This development caused a widespread reaction on social media following the protests, drawing criticism from many segments of society.
COURT ISSUES ACQUITTAL
The 7 young people tried at the Istanbul 19th Criminal Court of First Instance were acquitted following the trial process. The court had previously decided to release the defendants during one of the hearings.
In today's hearing, the court ruled for their acquittal on the grounds that there was "insufficient evidence that the young people had committed a crime."
