AFAD announces what should be in an emergency kit
AFAD has announced the essential items that should be in a disaster and emergency kit. Especially following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on April 23, it was emphasized that the first 72 hours are critical and that these kits should be kept in an easily accessible place at all times.

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul on April 23 has brought the question "what should be in a disaster and emergency kit?" back to the agenda.
AFAD has compiled a list on its website of items that should be in an emergency kit, which is necessary for individuals to sustain their lives during the first hours of emergencies and disasters.
THE FIRST 72 HOURS ARE CRITICAL
Accordingly, the first 72 hours following disasters, especially earthquakes, are of critical importance.
In order to counter potential delays in the arrival of rescue teams during this period, it is necessary to have a kit ready that can meet the basic needs of individuals and families.
It is recommended that disaster and emergency kits be prepared to meet the needs not only of individuals but also of special needs groups such as infants, the elderly, and the disabled, as well as pets, and that the kit be kept in an easily accessible place at all times.
WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED?
AFAD points out the importance of including the following items in a disaster and emergency kit:
"A pocket knife, whistle, some cash, paper, pen, blanket or sleeping bag, scissors, duct tape, plastic cover, battery-operated radio, flashlight, spare batteries, first aid kit, regularly used medications and their prescriptions, sufficient amount of food and drinking water, hygiene kit, 3 days' worth of food and water for pets, and photocopies of important documents."
It is also recommended to add documents proving the status of disabled individuals, a disability ID card if available, spare prosthetics, medications and prescriptions; for infants, formula, baby bottles, diapers, toys, and activity materials; and for elderly individuals, medical documents, spare prosthetics, and medications.
It is also advised to regularly check the expiration dates of the prepared food, beverages, medications, and hygiene materials, to choose clothing suitable for seasonal conditions, and to review and renew the contents of the kit every 6 months.

AFAD draws attention to the fact that these kits should be kept not only at home and in workplaces, but also in vehicles, schools, and classrooms.
It is recommended that students, together with their teachers, determine the materials they might need and keep their kits in their classrooms in a place where their teachers can easily reach them.
