AFAD has announced in a message sent to earthquake-affected tenants that rent assistance will be terminated as of June.

The message stated, "We began rent support payments in April 2023 for our tenant families residing in homes determined to have moderate or greater damage. We will complete the support payments for tenants, which were planned for 12 months, by making the 15th and final payment in June."

AĞBABA: HOW WILL TENANTS PAY THEIR RENT?

CHP Malatya Deputy Veli Ağbaba reacted to the decision by sharing the message posted by AFAD.

Ağbaba said, "AFAD has announced it! Earthquake-affected tenants have once again been treated like stepchildren. The rent assistance paid to tenants living in moderately and heavily damaged buildings is ending this month. Rent assistance for homeowners will continue, while assistance for tenants will be cut off."

Ağbaba stated that the treatment of tenants whose homes were destroyed or who were evicted by their landlords is unacceptable, adding, "How will tenants pay rents that have already increased at least 5-fold since the earthquake without receiving rent assistance? The state should not discriminate between earthquake victims; this wrong practice must be abandoned immediately."
