Ahmet Ercan explains how much the earthquake in Kamchatka will affect Turkey
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan stated that the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kamchatka, in the east of Russia, would affect Turkey by 3 percent, and drew attention to the North Anatolian Fault.

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that the earthquake took place at 02:24 Turkish time, at a depth of 19 kilometers. Following the earthquake, tsunami waves 13 meters high were observed in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Tsunami warnings were issued and evacuations were carried out in regions such as the west coast of the US, China, Russia, Hawaii, Alaska, and Japan. The Mediterranean Seismological Center also issued a similar warning.
Geophysical Engineer Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan evaluated the details of the earthquake, stating that this event occurred at the intersection point of three continents. Speaking to Oda TV, Ercan stated that Kamchatka is located between the movement directions of the Eurasian and American continents and that such earthquakes are expected events.
Ercan stated that they predicted the tsunami waves would not exceed 3 meters, noting that this was caused by a thrust fault occurring on the seabed. He also added that after this major earthquake, there could be aftershocks ranging from 7.8 to 8 in magnitude, and that medium-sized earthquakes could be seen on other fault lines around the world.
EFFECT ON TURKEY IS AT THE 3% LEVEL
Prof. Dr. Ercan stated that Turkey could be affected, albeit slightly, by this major earthquake and continued as follows:
“Turkey could be affected by this earthquake at a rate of 3%. Because all the plates on the globe are in communication with each other. The source of these earthquakes is the circulation currents in the asthenosphere 50 kilometers below the Earth's surface. These movements cannot be controlled.”
“If there is to be a result of this effect on Turkey, it could be seen most at a rate of 52% on the North Anatolian Fault, 32% on the West Anatolian fractures, and 13% on the East Anatolian Fault.”
