Ahmet Hakan's reaction to Özgür Özel over 'Dilruba': 'This has only one message...'

Hürriyet Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan, known for his proximity to the government, reacted to CHP leader Özgür Özel hosting Dilruba Kayserilioğlu as a 'guest of honor'.

Dilruba Kayserilioğlu, who was arrested for her remarks criticizing the ban on Instagram during the days when access to the platform was restricted, has been released.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel invited Dilruba, who was released after being held in custody for 18 days, to the opening ceremony of the 93rd İzmir International Fair.

Hürriyet Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan, known for his proximity to the government, reacted to this move by CHP leader Özel.

“There is a line between ‘opposing an arrest’ and ‘honoring foul language.’ And it is not a thin line, but a very thick one,” said Ahmet Hakan, criticizing Özgür Özel's stance, adding: “Hosting a person who calls everyone who has voted for the AK Party in any way ‘brain-sucked idiots’ as a guest of honor in the CHP has only one message: We want to say what Dilruba says, but we cannot because we want to win votes from those who vote for the AK Party.”

The relevant section from Ahmet Hakan's column titled 'She is Atatürk's daughter' is as follows:

“You are all brain-sucked idiots for supporting them.”

The person named Dilruba, who was held in custody for 18 days, said exactly this.

*

By “them”... she meant those governing the government.

By “idiots”... she meant everyone who has voted for the AK Party in any way.

*

I ask you: Is saying “you are brain-sucked idiots” an expression of opinion? Is putting the word “stable” (ahır) side-by-side with the President an idea? Should opposition be conducted with words like “idiot,” “sucked,” and “stable”?

And besides, what does “sucked” (emcüklenmiş) even mean anyway?

*

Isn't it an injustice to Atatürk himself to claim an “Atatürk daughter” from this foul style?

Does Atatürk's daughter speak with such a foul style?

*

Of course, one should say, “We do not agree with her style or insults, but her arrest is wrong and she should be released immediately.” In fact, it must be said.

I said this myself. I said, “It is something to be shamed and moved past, arresting her is wrong.”

*

But what is the point of turning this person into a hero with her style, insults, and “sucked” remarks?

What is the point of treating this person with a foul style like Rosa Luxemburg?

*

Özgür Özel should have strongly opposed this person's arrest. He did that. He even went to visit her while she was in custody.

There is nothing wrong with any of that. All of it is very correct.

But what should be said about Özgür Özel hosting this person as a “guest of honor” at a CHP event after she was released?

*

What is the message of this honoring?

Is it the message, “How beautifully you say ‘sucked,’ sister Dilruba”?

Is it the message, “Come on Dilruba, call them idiots again”?

But where will one get with such messages?

*

Actually, we have almost reached the destination.

Look here:

On social media, both Atatürk supporters and Atatürk opponents have started to curse each other out completely. The most vile insults are flying around.

Both sides are against the other side's foul-mouthed individuals. Both sides are protecting their own foul-mouthed individuals.

*

There is a line between “opposing an arrest” and “honoring foul language.” And it is not a thin line, but a very thick one!

If even Özgür Özel has lost that very thick line, who are we to say anything to whom?

*

What should Özgür Özel have done?

He should have done this:

To the person named Dilruba who was released...

He should have said, “Sister Dilruba. Your arrest was very wrong, we opposed it, and we did our best for your release. But your insults and your style were wrong. We can never accept you calling everyone who votes for a political party ‘idiots,’ putting the word ‘stable’ side-by-side with the President, or saying ‘brain-sucked’.”

In other words, he should have shamed her, he should have made her feel embarrassed.

Then he should have advised her, “Speak with a cleaner style from now on.”

*

Hosting a person who calls everyone who has voted for the AK Party in any way “brain-sucked idiots” as a guest of honor in the CHP has only one message:

*

“We want to say what Dilruba says, but we cannot because we want to win votes from those who vote for the AK Party.”
