AK Party MKYK member criticizes behavior of Sumud Flotilla passengers

The joyful images displayed by some Turkish participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set out to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, upon their return to Turkey from Israel have sparked public debate. The reaction to these images came from AK Party Central Decision and Administrative Board (MKYK) member Şamil Tayyar.

Some activists who took part in the humanitarian aid flotilla sent to Gaza became a trending topic on social media due to the cheerful photos and videos taken during their return to Turkey. The development also resonated within the AKP, and criticisms from the party leadership were not long in coming.

Making a statement on his social media account, Şamil Tayyar emphasized the importance of the humanitarian support the flotilla provided to Gaza, while expressing that the excessively joyful behavior displayed by some participants upon their return was found disturbing in terms of social sensitivity.

Tayyar drew attention to the risks the flotilla faced and the great struggle undertaken, stating, "The Global Sumud Flotilla's humanitarian action for Gaza undoubtedly deserves every kind of praise. They set out on a journey toward death after bidding farewell to their loved ones. Thank God there was no loss of life, and what remains is Israel's barbarism. Turkey also followed the process closely and reunited the activists with their loved ones safe and sound."

IMAGES THAT DREW REACTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Tayyar's primary criticism was directed at the return footage reflected in the press and on social media. In his statement, he included the following words: "In this process, the giggling, laughter, and celebrations like sports fans who have just won a tournament by a small number of activists, even if few, were heartbreaking. Because deaths continue in Gaza... While unspeakable pain is being experienced in an environment where 70 thousand people have been slaughtered, millions have been displaced, and children are dying of hunger, one should not have cast a shadow over the struggle of the people of Gaza."

Drawing attention to the tragedies experienced in Gaza and the ongoing deaths, Şamil Tayyar stated that the exaggerated celebrations held in the shadow of solidarity were not appropriate in terms of respect for people in pain. He reiterated his reaction with the words, "No one is more heroic than them. A little respect for the heroes who continue their struggle with torn bodies and skin and bones," he said.

While the discussions brought different views to social media, the importance of the humanitarian aid mission to Gaza was emphasized, and it was noted that the process should be managed with a sense of responsibility.
