AKP and MHP reject investigation into $1.47 billion compensation! Sharp reaction from CHP's Günaydın: 'We will make you pay for every cent'

Parliamentary research motions submitted by the CHP and IYI Party to investigate the approximately $1.47 billion arbitration award issued against Turkey were rejected by the votes of the AKP and MHP. During the debate in the General Assembly, while the CHP criticized the government, AKP Group Deputy Chairman Muhammet Emin Akbaşoğlu rejected the claims, stating, "There is absolutely no such thing as a $1.47 billion compensation as alleged. This is an outright lie."

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) convened under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Pervin Buldan. The CHP and IYI Party separately requested the opening of a parliamentary inquiry to investigate the approximately $1.47 billion compensation award issued against Turkey in the arbitration case regarding the Turkey-Iraq oil pipelines. However, the motions were rejected by the votes of AKP and MHP deputies.

Following the rejection of the motions, a debate on the issue took place in the General Assembly.

"WILL YOU BE THE ONES TO PAY THE 1 BILLION 471 MILLION DOLLARS?"

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın criticized the government by bringing the compensation award to the agenda in his speech at the General Assembly.

Addressing the AKP members, Günaydın said, "Will you be the ones to pay the 1 billion 471 million dollars? We will make you pay for every cent of this!"


AKBAŞOĞLU REJECTED THE COMPENSATION CLAIM

Taking the floor after Günaydın, AKP Group Deputy Chairman Muhammet Emin Akbaşoğlu argued that the CHP was using the issue to change the agenda. Claiming that the allegation regarding a $1.47 billion compensation against Turkey was untrue, Akbaşoğlu asserted that Turkey has taken significant steps in the field of energy.

Akbaşoğlu stated, "There is an effort here to create a different agenda by repeating a lie over and over again, so that the issues regarding the theft and corruption within the CHP itself do not come to the agenda, to change this situation, to change the agenda. There is absolutely no such thing as a $1.47 billion compensation as alleged. This is an outright lie. We are heading towards a very different path with both natural gas and the oil in Gabar, which we have cleared of terrorism. Whether you like it or not, we will definitely achieve a fully independent Turkey in energy."

WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE LEGAL PROCESS?

The Iraqi Central Government had applied to the ICC Court of Arbitration on the grounds that the oil exports carried out by Turkey via the Ceyhan Terminal with the approval of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq violated the crude oil pipeline agreement between the two countries, as it was done without the approval of the Baghdad administration.

In the arbitration process initiated under the agreement that has been in effect for over half a century, the panel rejected four of Iraq's five claims while accepting a significant portion of Turkey's demands within the scope of the counter-suit. However, the court ruled that Turkey had violated some of its obligations arising from the agreement and ordered approximately $1.47 billion in compensation. While Turkey's cancellation lawsuit filed in Paris was rejected, the final balance of receivables and debts between the parties is expected to become clear following the enforcement process currently underway in the USA.
