AKP's Usta on the 'natural birth' agenda: With a bigoted and reactionary mindset

Group deputy chairs of political parties took the floor at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to make assessments regarding the agenda. AKP Group Deputy Chair Leyla Şahin Usta also took the floor to comment on the natural birth agenda.

After taking the floor to make assessments regarding the agenda, Usta touched upon the natural birth debates and said the following:

"When we say birth, natural birth is understood. What we call a cesarean section is a surgery. This is a valid medical issue worldwide. When we say this in Turkey, for some reason, when we state the truth of the matter, it is interpreted as interfering with women, interfering with what someone does, or giving instructions; however, I think it is everyone's right to defend a medical fact and the truth.

Demanding natural birth is everyone's right and is a purely medical issue that should be the case. Drawing a different interpretation from this subject is completely absurd.

Of course, we will defend and encourage natural birth.

This is the most important form of birth for a woman to be at peace with her nature, her chemistry, and her physiology. Of course, we will defend and explain this. We will do our best for all our women to experience natural birth."

Stating that every kind of intervention will be performed when there is an indication, Usta continued as follows:

"It is not necessary to approach this with such a bigoted and reactionary mindset. We will continue our work regarding a medical and real birth.

There is absolutely no pressure or imposition here.

Of course, the right thing will be done together with the decisions of women and physicians, but of course, men are on one side of this issue.

Because these children also have fathers. And the fathers are men.

Therefore, men also need to be educated and made aware of this issue."
