Protests that began following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu turned into a boycott.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel first called for a boycott of certain brands; subsequently, an "economic boycott" was called for today.
While there was a harsh reaction from the AKP front to the boycott calls, AKP member Şamil Tayyar also criticized the boycott in a post on the social media platform X. Stating that the "boycott flopped," Tayyar said that the CHP's boycott actually 'benefited' the People's Alliance.
Here is Şamil Tayyar's post:
"The boycott flopped. Those who glorified the boycott with photos taken in the early hours of the morning were left stunned as the hours passed.
They squandered the relative social advantage, which was primarily due to economic conditions, on marginal whims such as threats, blackmail, and boycotts."
"For various reasons, they consolidated the disgruntled and resentful voters in the nationalist/conservative/liberal right base against the ruling components in favor of the government.
There was a bit of tension, it was a bit costly, but the CHP actually achieved what the government could not.
The cracks in the base of the People's Alliance began to fill, and mergers began to accelerate. In my opinion, the CHP deserves a thank you from the AK Party and MHP."
