Reaction to 'Imralı' from AKP's Şamil Tayyar: 'Turkey's priority should be...'

Evaluating the new resolution process that began following the call from MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, AKP member Şamil Tayyar stated, "There is no need for either Imralı or Qandil."

Following the call from Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, the visit of DEM Party members Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan to Imralı to meet with Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the terrorist organization PKK, has fueled public debate regarding a new resolution process.

The DEM Party delegation that met with Öcalan subsequently visited Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, respectively. The DEM Party's tour of Imralı in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) is expected to continue in the coming days.

"THERE IS NO NEED FOR EITHER IMRALI OR QANDIL"

Former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar offered criticisms regarding Bahçeli's call and the subsequent process.

Stating that Turkey must first close its democracy deficit and strengthen the economy, Tayyar remarked, "There is no need for either Imralı or Qandil for this."

"The government's success in the fight against terrorism is undeniable.

This success is also reflected in public opinion polls.

While terrorism used to rank first in surveys regarding problems, it now fails to make the top 10.

The public's indifference to new Imralı-focused pursuits stems not only from a trust issue but also somewhat from the priority list.

In my opinion…

Turkey should primarily close its democracy deficit, expand the scope of fundamental rights and freedoms, embrace every segment of society, strengthen the sense of justice, fix the economy, and continue on its path.

If you see fit, we can call it the Ankara Criteria, and that would be that.

There is no need for either Imralı or Qandil for this."
