Former AKP MP Mehmet Metiner has reacted on his social media account to Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç's statement that the "right to hope" for PKK terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan is "not on our agenda."

Recalling the call made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli on this issue, Metiner said, "To say anything that would let Bahçeli's words fall to the ground would be more than just a mistake."

In his post, Metiner used the following expressions:

"If the wise leader Bahçeli has said 'right to hope', then saying anything else that would let those words fall to the ground or lose their significance would be more than just a mistake. When the time comes, whatever is required by that 'right to hope' will surely be done. As long as terrorism ends and weapons are consigned to history forever!

Since it is Bahçeli who has said it, and since the process is evolving toward a hopeful place, then the 'right to hope' is a subject that will always be on our agenda with importance."

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç, who was the target of Metiner's remarks, had closed the door on discussions regarding the "right to hope" for Abdullah Öcalan in a clear manner during a statement made in response to journalists' questions before the AKP group meeting. Tunç said, "There is no such situation. There is no such meeting either."

Tunç summarized his remarks as follows:

"There are HSK elections and other issues on the Parliament's agenda. We are speaking generally about what needs to be done within the legal framework regarding prison conditions. We can expand the regulations in the Law on the Execution of Sentences. We have shared our work on this matter with our parliamentary group. However, a subject like the right to hope is neither on our agenda nor being discussed. If there is a matter that requires legislation, these are under the authority of the legislature, not the executive."

Tunç also evaluated the DEM Party's request regarding Öcalan's meetings with certain individuals, stating, "How convicts will meet in prisons is clearly defined in the law; whatever is necessary within this framework will be done."

WHAT HAD BAHÇELİ SAID?

MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, in his speech at his party's group meeting on October 22, 2024, had said, "If the isolation of the terrorist leader is lifted, let him come and speak at the DEM Party group meeting in the TBMM. Let him shout that terrorism has completely ended and the organization has been disbanded. If he shows this resolve and determination, let the path be wide open for the necessary legal regulation regarding the use of the 'Right to Hope' and for him to benefit from it."
