AKP municipality had removed the name: Statement from the Tokat Governor's Office regarding Ömer Halisdemir!

The AKP-run Sulusaray Municipality removed the name of Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Street and renamed it after Şahin Hasgül, who served as the district's mayor for 4 terms. This decision, taken by the Municipal Council, was canceled by the Tokat Governor's Office.

The AKP-run municipality of the Sulusaray district in Tokat decided to change the names of streets bearing the names of Ömer Halisdemir, a symbol of the July 15 coup attempt, Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim, and the famous captain Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha.

NAMES OF MAYORS WERE GIVEN

In the vote held at the municipal council, the name of Şahin Hasgül, who served as the district's mayor for 4 terms, was given to Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Street; the name of former mayor İbrahim Turgut was given to Yavuz Sultan Selim Street; and the name of another former mayor, Nazım Bıldırcın, was given to Barbaros Street. The name changes were sent to the District Governorate and the Governor's Office.

The decision to change the names caused reactions on social media.

GOVERNOR'S OFFICE CANCELED IT

Following the reactions, the Tokat Governor's Office canceled the decision of the Sulusaray Municipality.

In the statement made by the Governor's Office, it was stated: "This statement has been deemed necessary following the publication of news reports titled 'They removed the name of Martyr Ömer Halisdemir and gave it the name of the Mayor.' The decision to change the name of 'Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Street' in Article 4 of the Sulusaray Municipal Council's August agenda was discussed and accepted by a majority vote of the Municipal Council. However, the decision to change the name of 'Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Street' in Article 4 of the Municipal Council agenda was canceled by the Governor's Office with the letter dated 07.10.2023 and numbered 36364, and it has been restored to its former state. Respectfully announced to the public."


The July 15 Association also quoted the press release of the Tokat Governor's Office and thanked Tokat Governor Numan Hatipoğlu. The following statements were included in the announcement made by the association;

“We are following with sadness the recent proposals to change the names of places where our heroes' names were given.

We invite all our institutions and organizations to act with the same sensitivity on this issue.”
