AKP-run Sulusaray Municipality removes Ömer Halisdemir's name from street, replaces it with former mayor's name
The AKP-led Sulusaray municipality in Tokat has removed the name of July 15 martyr Ömer Halisdemir from a street that previously bore his name. The municipality also changed the names of streets that had been named after symbolic figures such as Yavuz Sultan Selim and Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha.

The AKP-run Sulusaray municipality discussed changing the names of certain streets and avenues in the district during a council meeting. The proposal to change the names of streets and avenues bearing the names of Ömer Halisdemir, one of the symbolic figures of July 15, the Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim, and the Kapudan Pasha Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha was approved by majority vote.
FORMER MAYOR'S NAME GIVEN
According to the report by İsmail Akduman from Sözcü, in the vote held, the name of the Astsubay Ömer Halisdemir Avenue was changed to Şahin Hasgül, who served as mayor of the district for 4 terms; the name of Yavuz Sultan Selim Street was changed to that of former mayor İbrahim Turgut, and the name of Barbaros Street was changed to that of another former mayor, Nazım Bıldırcın. The name changes have been sent to the district governor's office and the governor's office. It was stated that the street and avenue names would be changed if the governor's office approves.

Citizens who reacted to the change described the decision as an insult to the July 15 martyr. Citizens stated, “If they want to keep the names of former mayors alive, they should find other places. They should build parks, gardens, or new streets. This is an insult to both our ancestors and our martyr.”
