AKP's 'Youth Festival' sparks controversy: The 'pious generation' debate

Footage shared from the 'Youth Festival' event organized by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Kocaeli has caused a wide stir on social media.

The sharing of moments during the event where young people were dancing brought the 'pious generation' debates back to the agenda, especially within circles close to the government.

A SERIES OF COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Following the spread of the footage, social media users offered various assessments.

Among the comments, statements such as 'They set out with the goal of an Islamic generation, but a different picture emerged,' 'If similar images had occurred at an opposition event, there would have been a huge backlash,' and 'The effort to reach every segment has made the party's identity controversial' stood out.

The discussions quickly became a trending topic on social media.

SUPPORT FOR AKP FROM AYDIN ÜNAL

Following the footage that became a hot topic, writer Aydın Ünal, known for his proximity to the government, also made a statement on the matter.

In a post on his social media account, Ünal argued that the images circulated from the event did not reflect the entire picture.

'CRITICISMS ARE A GREAT INJUSTICE'

Aydın Ünal stated that the criticisms directed at the AKP and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan were unfair.

In his post, Ünal used the following expressions:

'Criticizing the AKP, the President, or the AK Youth over some unpleasant images at the AKP Kocaeli Youth Festival is a great injustice and ingratitude.'

'THE RATE OF RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVE YOUTH HAS EXCEEDED 30 PERCENT'

In his statement, Ünal argued that the rate of religious conservative youth in Turkey has increased compared to previous years.

'There are things going wrong, sure, but in total, the rate of religious conservative youth has increased exponentially compared to the 80s and 90s and has exceeded 30 percent,' said Ünal, making a comparison with past periods.

'DO NOT LOOK AT THE BAD EXAMPLES'

Continuing his post, Ünal stated, 'Instead of lamenting why it is not 100 percent, one should be grateful that it has risen from 6 percent in the 80s to 30 percent now.'

Ünal also added, 'Do not look at the bad examples; a solid youth is coming quietly and deeply, slowly but with sure steps.'
