Alarming Istanbul earthquake statement from Celal Şengör: 'Turkey could lose its independence'

Renowned geologist Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör made striking statements regarding the major Istanbul earthquake.

Speaking to Independent Türkçe, Şengör reminded that the fault line passing through the middle of the Sea of Marmara would trigger an earthquake with a magnitude between 7.2 and 7.4. Stating that a fault line also passes through the middle of the Çınarcık basin, Şengör said the following:

"THE SECTION BETWEEN TEKİRDAĞ AND ISTANBUL WILL BE COMPLETELY DESTROYED"

“Now, the rupture of any one of these will naturally cause great destruction in Istanbul, but it will also do so in Tekirdağ. The section between Tekirdağ and Istanbul will be completely destroyed. Won't the east of Istanbul up to İzmit be destroyed? That will be destroyed too. You have a lot of industry there. Won't the south of the Marmara be affected? It will be severely affected. Think of the Bursa plain, the Balıkesir plain. Right? All of these will be affected.

“TURKEY COULD LOSE ITS INDEPENDENCE”

The Istanbul earthquake could result in Turkey losing its independence. Because Turkey's economy, Turkey's knowledge and skills will not be enough to overcome this earthquake,” claimed Şengör, adding, “Turkey will ask for help. The world will gladly provide this help. Because Istanbul is at stake. Do not forget, one of the articles of the Treaty of Sèvres was that Istanbul would be a city jointly governed by the League of Nations countries. This is still on the agenda. We are not aware of it, but this is still on the agenda.”
