In the city of Latakia in western Syria, clashes between opposition groups and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have been ongoing for four days. With the intensification of the clashes, it is reported that incidents of executions, torture, and kidnappings targeting Alawites in the region have increased.

According to the French news agency AFP, it is alleged that more than 300 Alawites have been massacred in attacks by armed forces affiliated with the interim government. While reports from the region have caused a major stir in the international community, a statement regarding the events has also come from the US.

US: WE CONDEMN JIHADIST GROUPS

The US Department of State, in a statement regarding the developments in Latakia, indicated that it strongly condemns the attacks by radical jihadist groups. The following statements were included in the ministry's announcement:

"The US condemns the radical Islamist terrorists, including foreign jihadists, who have been massacring people in western Syria in recent days. We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The US stands with Syria's ethnic minorities, including Alawites, Druze, Christians, and Kurds. Syria's interim administrators must hold the perpetrators of these massacres accountable."
