CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır has reacted sharply to MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, who responded to criticisms regarding the commission's visit to PKK leader Öcalan by saying, "Just as one goes to Silivri, one can also go to İmralı."

Stating that he was ashamed of Bahçeli's remarks, Başarır noted that the political prisoners in Silivri did not burn villages or fire bullets at Turkish soldiers.

"NONE OF THEM MURDERED PEOPLE"

Appearing as a guest on the 'Rota' program hosted by Kürşad Oğuz on Halk TV, Başarır reacted to Bahçeli as follows:

"There are innocent political prisoners in Silivri. There are people who have been imprisoned for a long time despite there being no concrete evidence against them. None of them fired bullets at this country's soldiers, killed babies in this country, or emptied villages and massacred the people in those villages. For once, everyone should know their place and be careful with their sentences. You are comparing the head of a terrorist organization, İmralı, with the people lying in Silivri. You are trampling on the presumption of innocence. Did the people in Silivri receive thousands of aggravated life sentences?"

BAŞARIR CALLS FOR AN APOLOGY FROM BAHÇELİ

Başarır also stated that he expects an apology from Bahçeli for the comparison in question.

"What is this? What kind of comparison is this? First and foremost, it is a discourse that is contrary to human rights, the rule of law, and the presumption of innocence," said Başarır, adding, "They must apologize as soon as possible and absolutely, definitely withdraw this approach. It is not acceptable, sir. No one in this country deserves this. If he is so curious about these visits, he should really go to Silivri. He should meet with these people," he said.
