It has been alleged that reporter Obaida Hitto, who was covering news for TRT World near the Umayyad Mosque in the Syrian capital of Damascus, has been detained.

According to Medyaradar, a bag that Hitto had forgotten at a cafe was found and handed over to a police station. It is claimed that during the authorities' inspection, 50 grams of narcotics were found in the bag. It was reported that the reporter was detained when he went to the police station to retrieve his bag.

Among the allegations are that Hitto is being held at a police station near the Umayyad Mosque and that a 6-year prison sentence is being sought for him. Following the incident, it was stated that the cameraman who was with Hitto has returned to Turkey.

Furthermore, it was also claimed that Obaida Hitto requested support from his father, Ghassan Hitto, who was the first prime minister of the interim government established by the Syrian opposition in 2013, but did not receive a positive response.
