In İzmir, CHP Mayor İlkay Çiçek was arrested as part of an investigation into Menderes Municipality on charges of bribery, extortion, forgery of official documents, misconduct in office, and causing zoning pollution.
WHATSAPP CORRESPONDENCE ON THE INVESTIGATION'S AGENDA
WhatsApp messages that surfaced before the finalization of İlkay Çiçek's arrest decision also caused controversy. The phrase "I am walking money, baby," which was allegedly included in the correspondence Çiçek had with a person claimed to be his lover, became a topic of public discussion.
Çiçek's wife stated in a statement that the messages in question were prepared using artificial intelligence.
Following the allegations regarding the correspondence and the ongoing investigation, İlkay Çiçek was referred to the disciplinary board by the CHP administration with a request for permanent expulsion.
COULD THE BALANCE OF POWER IN MENDERES MUNICIPALITY CHANGE?
Following the arrest of İlkay Çiçek, the question of how the acting mayor will be determined in Menderes Municipality has also come to the agenda.
The issue was evaluated on the Medya Kritik program broadcast on TGRT Haber. Speaking on the program, TGRT Haber Ankara Representative Fatih Atik drew attention to the distribution of seats in the municipal council and the upcoming acting mayor election.
"IF A FEW COUNCIL MEMBERS CHANGE THEIR MINDS..."
Atik stated that the CHP has 18 members in the Menderes Municipal Council, while the total number of AKP, MHP, and independent members is 15.
Atik used the following expressions in his assessment:
"18 ARE FROM THE CHP, 15 ARE FROM THE AK PARTY, MHP, AND THERE ARE ONE OR TWO INDEPENDENTS."
Suggesting that the municipal administration could change hands if some council members change their stance, Atik said, "If a few municipal council members there change their minds, object to these immoralities, and the AK Party nominates a candidate, Menderes Municipality could also pass to the AK Party."
