Nefes columnist Nuray Babacan shared striking behind-the-scenes information regarding the reflections of the silence felt for some time within the AKP base inside the party. According to Babacan, this calmness observed in the base is being evaluated as an unusual situation.
"THEY ARE NOT EXPRESSING OPINIONS ON ANY SUBJECT"
In her article titled "The Strange Silence of the Base," Babacan stated that the difficulties in the economy are understandable in terms of voter dissatisfaction, but emphasized that this is not the main issue. Babacan reported that it is being discussed that the AKP mass has been in a "strange silence" recently, writing that the following expressions are being voiced behind the scenes: "Even if they were angry, even if they were criticizing, this was a sign of vitality. Now they are not expressing opinions on any subject. Are these assessments being made that this silence means they have given up hope on us?"
"THE ONLY MEETING AREA WHERE THEY ARE COMFORTABLE IS NATO"
Stating that similar discomforts have emerged in the foreign contacts of AKP members, Babacan noted, "They are tired of the independence of the judiciary, anti-democratic practices, and Ekrem İmamoğlu and other CHP mayors being constantly discussed under the Turkey heading in EU meetings, OSCE or European Commission meetings. The only meeting area where they are comfortable is NATO. They also know that this stems from the need for Turkey."
NOTABLE MHP COMMENTARY
Babacan stated that another topic discussed within the AKP is the tensions occasionally experienced with the MHP. The author expressed that party members do not view statements by Devlet Bahçeli or MHP executives that contradict government policies as a problem, but rather as a "warning to the partner."
Reporting that the view that the consequences of a possible change in MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's alliance stance would emerge rapidly is being voiced within the party, Babacan also included the following statement:
"An interesting comment is as follows: 'If Devlet Bahçeli enters into a change of attitude regarding the alliance partnership, you will see the results from morning to evening...'"
