Lawyers for journalist İsmail Arı, who was arrested and sent to Sincan Prison on March 22 on charges of 'publicly disseminating misleading information,' had filed an application for his release. Reviewing the file, the Ankara 18th Criminal Court of First Instance did not find the appeal appropriate and ruled for the continuation of Arı's detention.
In the reasoning for the decision, it was stated that the current detention process was both in accordance with procedure and did not violate the law.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Journalist Arı was detained on the evening of March 21 in Tokat, where he had gone to visit his family, as part of an investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and was arrested the following day. Arı's detention, which has continued for 16 days, has brought about various debates regarding press freedom and freedom of expression.
