The Republican People's Party (CHP) held its 21st Extraordinary Congress on Sunday, April 6, to prevent the risk of a trustee being appointed. Özgür Özel, who remained the sole candidate at the congress, was re-elected as CHP Chairman with 1,171 votes.
While the harsh remarks directed at CHP leader Özgür Özel by former MP Berhan Şimşek, whose candidacy was rejected for submitting signatures 5 minutes late, dominated the agenda, it has been learned that CHP academic Kemal Çiftçili has filed a petition for the cancellation of the congress.
Speaking on the Taksim Meydanı program on TGRT Haber, journalist Nuray Başaran shared the 4-page objection petition filed with the YSK.
Başaran stated the following:
"There is a 48-hour period for objections in extraordinary congresses. It is claimed that the application made to the YSK within this period is based on serious grounds.
CHP academic Kemal Çiftçili filed a petition for the cancellation of the extraordinary congress within 48 hours. Kemal Çiftçili is documenting and sharing on social media step-by-step how he was prevented from becoming a member of the Party Assembly. Çiftçili justifies his claims according to the party bylaws. The petition states, 'It was rushed through in an anti-democratic manner; we could not become candidates due to physical obstructions.'
He sets out one by one how the Extraordinary Congress was contrary to Article 49 of the party bylaws titled 'Opening and Presidential Board,' Article 50 titled 'Congress Deliberations and Decisions,' and Article 51 of the CHP bylaws titled 'Elections at the Congress,' based on the events that took place.
At the same time, it is stated that there was a circumvention of the law under the pretext that a trustee would be appointed. Above all, the petition also includes how Berhan Şimşek was prevented from becoming a candidate. It is stated that, let alone the party bylaws, our right to vote and be elected was taken away from us, and that we could not become candidates as the principle of equality was violated. The petition requests the cancellation of the congress, stating that the will of the delegates was compromised."
