Are fines being issued to those who do not answer Alo 124? TurkStat clarifies

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has announced that claims suggesting administrative fines are issued if a call from the Alo 124 TurkStat Call Center is answered but the conversation is declined or cut short are not true.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) issued a statement on the matter via its social media account.

The statement pointed out that posts have been circulating on some social media accounts and WhatsApp groups, and stated, "The claim that an administrative fine is issued if a call from the Alo 124 TurkStat Call Center number 124 is answered but the conversation is declined or cut short does not reflect the truth."

The statement noted that TurkStat personnel may conduct interviews using the telephone data collection method via the Alo 124 TurkStat Call Center with household members determined within the framework of a full census or sampling, and added the following:

"In this context, respondents are obligated to provide the requested information and data completely, accurately, and free of charge in the form, duration, and standards determined by the Presidency, within the framework of the fundamental rights and duties defined in the Constitution. Individuals who are unable to speak due to reasons such as being ill, elderly, or in traffic can participate by scheduling an appointment with the TurkStat personnel making the call. Please do not give credence to manipulative news and posts targeting our institution's work."
