Arrested in operation before NATO summit: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Memiş's police statement revealed
A total of 103 people, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Memiş, journalist Yıldız Tar, TEMA Foundation Ankara Representative Nevzat Özer, and Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) lawyers Semra Demir and Kürşat Bafra, were arrested, while 26 others were placed under house arrest following operations conducted before the NATO Summit. Academic Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Memiş, who was arrested in operations conducted before the NATO Summit, stated in her police testimony, "I have no connection with the TKP/ML terrorist organization or any other terrorist organizations. I am a scientist. I am a person who works for my state and my nation."
Ankara University Economics Department faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emel Memiş denied the accusation of "being a member of an armed terrorist organization" in her police statement. Stating that she did not wish to benefit from effective remorse provisions, Memiş said, "Because I did not join the TKP/ML terrorist organization."
Explaining that she was born in Bursa in 1975, works as a faculty member in the Ankara University Economics Department, and is a mother of one, Memiş stated that all of her trips abroad were conducted within the scope of conferences, research, and academic work.
Stating that she had previously only been detained in 2016 during the process targeting Academics for Peace and was released on the same day, Memiş noted that she was also acquitted in that case.
"VERY SERIOUS ACCUSATIONS"
Throughout her statement, Memiş responded to all questions regarding organization membership, the structure of the organization, its activities, financial resources, recruitment, courier activities, the use of code names, and whether she participated in actions on behalf of the organization by saying, "I have no connection with the TKP/ML terrorist organization or any other terrorist organizations. Therefore, I have no knowledge regarding the matters you have asked about."
At the end of her statement, emphasizing that the accusations were baseless, Memiş said, "I absolutely have no connection or affiliation with the TKP/ML terrorist organization. I am a scientist. I have provided training on budgeting and aging issues to over 350 public officials from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Presidency of Strategy and Budget (SBB), and the AK Party Women's Branches. All of these accusations are baseless. These are very serious accusations for me. I am a person who works for my state and my nation."
