During the local election process, the 'meatball' controversy between Murat Kurum and Ekrem İmamoğlu had become a major topic of discussion. Kurum had targeted İmamoğlu with the words, 'Go and manage a meatball shop.'

Ekrem İmamoğlu had responded to Kurum by saying, "This amateur candidate, who doesn't do his homework, said, 'Go and run a meatball shop.' You know, I had a meatball shop when I was 21. Do you know what the issue is now? I wish he had also run a meatball shop at my age, at 21; he would have known what ground meat is, he would have known what meat is. He would have known how a greengrocer works, how lettuce and salad are prepared, and how dishes are washed. Because he doesn't know these things, because he hasn't learned about life, because he doesn't know life... We are actually teaching him the biggest life lesson of his life right now, all together. He is learning about life. He is learning about retirees, he is learning about women, he is learning about mothers, he is learning about children. Because he doesn't know these things, he is in this situation today."

"HE WILL REMEMBER EVERY TIME HE EATS"

The People's Alliance's Istanbul candidate Murat Kurum had targeted İmamoğlu again, stating, "You cannot even enter the doors of the ministries; there is no such merit. They would only take you into the ministries as a meatball seller."

İmamoğlu had stated the following in his final response:

"It is clear that he has a problem with tradesmen and being a tradesman. I didn't tell him 'You can't be a minister,' I said 'You can't be a meatball seller.' After March 31, he will remember the Istanbul election in every meatball he eats."
